Project Update - 10 May 2024

Work on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge is progressing steadily with 43 of the 47 new bridge deck panels now in place. While the work is progressing well, we are behind schedule due to bad weather and additional maintenance being required to the structure.

While this work is carried out, the nightly bridge closures will continue from Sunday 12 May until sealing occurs, 7.30pm-4.30am.

Weather impacts on progress, as panels cannot be safely lifted and put into place in windy conditions, and rain impacts welding required to attach brackets to the beams which hold the new deck panels.

While the contractor is on site and the scaffolding is in place, additional maintenance works are also being undertaken to check, tighten and replace bolts at connections along the structure.

Once all the new bridge deck panels are in place, the deck will need to be chip sealed. This work needs to be undertaken during the daytime when the temperatures are better suited to a successful outcome, as night time temperatures are too cold.

Sealing the bridge deck is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 14 May between the hours of 12noon and 2pm. The bridge will be fully closed during this time.

Please note that this work is weather dependent and can only be undertaken in fine and dry conditions. Any changes will be further communicated.

Following sealing, the guardrail works, and scaffolding removal will be completed as daytime works. This will involve short 10 minutes closures during the daytime until Friday 31 May. During this period, the bridge will be fully open at night.

We thank you for your continued patience while we complete this work. If you would like any further information about this project please contact transportation@selwyn.govt.nz
